The City of Austin requires an alarm permit for each residence or business that operates an alarm system in the City Limits of the City of Austin. Austin Police Department provides criminal history checks and “Clearance Letters” for those persons requesting that service. In order to process that request, it is necessary the requestor provide (1) one request form for each person needing a criminal history record check, (2) a complete set of fingerprints submitted along with the request, (3) remit $25 for each record request (4) if your letter needs to be certified, there is an additional $2 charge for each requested clearance letter, (5) a postage paid self-addressed envelope for your remittance.
Personal checks and money orders must show that payment is to be paid in US Currency and is to be paid by a bank in the United States. That information must be preprinted on the money order, this information cannot be typed or handwritten on the money order. Checks and money orders should be made out to the City of Austin.
Austin Police Department provides fingerprinting service every Wednesday from 8:30am to 4:00pm. If you require fingerprinting, that service fee is $11.75 for a full set of prints on two fingerprint cards. A $6 fee is charged for each additional card if needed.
The APD’s online incident reporting system allows you to report a criminal incident to the Police Department. Entries into this system are for incidents that are not in progress and that present no threat of immediate harm to anyone.
The Greater Austin Crime Commission was formed in order to help the Austin Police Department reduce crime. The commission enables community members to support public safety concerns.
BanditTracker features images of persons who may be involved in criminal activity or wanted for questioning. Citizens can view and comment on these images or contact law enforcement about the individuals.

The Austin Police Department has partnered with Raids Online to provide the public with real time crime information in specific areas of Austin. The information is obtained from Versadex (our RMS System), displayed on a crime map with a link allowing citizens to enter crime tips. As a result, the public is better informed about crime in their area and can see these incidents on a map.
Citizens can search for persons in the registered sex offenders database using geographical information or names.
Citizens may ride with officers while they are on patrol. View the Police Observer Program Policy 324.1 (page 197) here.To apply for a ride-along, please fill out one of the applications Printable or Electronic and follow these instructions for sending the form. When selecting your date to ride, please keep in mind that it takes 3-4 weeks to get a ride along scheduled. Riders may only ride ONCE per calendar quarter.
