I see that there are 2,646 officers and support personnel of the Austin Police Dept. If there is such a thing as Officers Of the Year, my vote goes to Sarah Foster and Doug Broadwater.
Last Saturday (June 23), my wife and I had a blowout on Highway 71 at the Bergstrom Airport exit. We managed to steer our car off the highway near the frontage road, but cars were still zooming by at seemingly Indy 500 speed and it was a very dangerous spot. Officers Foster and Broadwater pulled behind us with their cars to protect ours from oncoming traffic, and escorted us as we drove on the tire rim to a nearby spot where we could phone for help. Because it was after 5 p.m., we had trouble getting roadside assistance and it was apparent no help would be coming. Officer Broadwater was kind enough to change the shredded tire (in the 100-degree heat). Since my wife and I are in our late 60s and not as nimble as we once were, his efforts were much-appreciated and darned near lifesaving, or pretty close to it.
Memo to police chief Brian Manley: Kudos and high-fives to officers Sarah Foster and Doug Broadwater. If the rest of your officers are anywhere near as courteous as these two are, you have the No. 1 police force in America. Their training and professionalism and eager-to-help attitude are a true credit to Austin. Many thanks again.
